New York City's famous NSFW bakery Sugar Wood raises $50K in crowdfunding campaign
The money acquired from the crowdfunding campaign will increase Sugar Wood’s direct to consumer revenue stream to sell their product across the country.
My mom is obsessed with Bravo and its mascot Andy Cohen. So, naturaly when Andy bit into a big juicy penis-shaped baked good drizzled in milk chocolate from Sugar Wood on an episode of Watch What Happens Live, we added a new experience to the very tip top of her New York City bucket list.
The Brand
Sugar Wood, “an inclusive, sex-positive dessert shop” located on Prince Street in SoHo, offers naughty waffles, cookies and chocolates served with a side of punny sexual innuendo jokes.
“Is this your first time?” the Drizzologist asked my mother. “Don’t worry, we’ll be gentle.”
Sugar Wood founder Austin Allan says he and his staff aim for fun while creating a memorable and inclusive experience centered around sex positivity and filling up on sweets.
“You know it’s gonna be silly when you come here,” Allan laughs. “People chat in line and create a community around this experience and everyone is invited to the party. Everybody walks through our door from all over the world — every race, every gender, and socioeconomic status.”
From bachelorette parties to mother and son day trips, Sugar Wood truly offers unique experiences to all.
After my mom and I purchased our phallic inspired baked goods, we figured we would stroll down to Perry Street and devour them while standing at the stoop of Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment. And just like that, we ate dick and marked two items off of her bucket list.
The Business of Bukkake Baked Goods
Sugar Wood recently closed a crowdfunding campaign that raised a little over their goal of $50,000 with the platform Republic. During the campaign, individuals bought equity in the naughty bakery with investments as little as $150.
The money acquired from the crowdfunding campaign will increase Sugar Wood’s direct to consumer revenue stream to sell their product across the country. Allan said he also wants to invest in better packaging and advertising for the brand.
“The power of this brand is in its community...and crowdfunding really taps into [that],” Allan said. “Closing this crowdfunding campaign is confirmation that Sugar Wood is a movement. We truly have the support of our community: friends and family, our amazing customers, and our investors as well. Now we can get to work on implementing our comprehensive digital marketing plan so customers all over the country can get their hands and lips on our delicious desserts.”
With an five-figure lease in the heart of SoHo and several part time employees, Sugar Wood’s array of delectable dicks still turn a nice profit with an 87 percent margin creating a sustainable business model for the risque brand.
In addition to bringing a lively experience to consumers, Allan says giving back to the LGBTQ+ community and nonprofits like The Phluid Phoundation is imperative for the brand's success. Since opening in in 2022, they have raised of $10,000.
