17 Organizations Supporting Trans Folks in Texas
In light of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s escalated attacks on transgender youth this week, here are 17 grassroots organizations you should know that are supporting LGBTQ people in Texas.
This week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott made headlines with his directive for “licensed professionals” and “members of the general public” to alert child protective services if they encounter parents of transgender children who appear to be undergoing gender-affirming medical care. The letter he sent to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) essentially accuses supportive parents of transgender minors of being child abusers and encourages vigilantes to turn them in as if they were criminals.
While some analysts see this as the Governor’s latest effort to shore up his far-right conservative base before the upcoming gubernatorial primary election, the message is clear to trans/LGBTQ people and allies in Texas: you are not safe here and should be afraid.
Many people were outraged as news broke of the devastating directive and sought ways to show support for trans and LGBTQ kids in Texas. One Twitter thread by Heron Greenesmith, Esq. went viral providing links to Texas-based organizations that provide local, community care and support for trans and queer folks. We’ve adapted that list below.
